Summer of the Same Movies?

30 Jun

Tirelessly monitoring the Twittersphere this morning I came across this post from Gawker revealing the similar, albeit not surprising, resemblance between last January’s No Strings Attached and the upcoming Friends With Benefits. The post shared this awesome mashup trailer from BlindFilmCritic.

It reminded me of this trailer we made about The Hangover Part II.

It’s not a new criticism that Hollywood too often depends on sequels, prequels and re-makes to pull in the big bucks (will Transformers: Dark of the Moon really be any different from the first two films?).  But with The Hangover Part II surpassing Part I by grossing almost $530 million worldwide, why would they do anything different?

Still, following comedic templates for a sequels is one thing, following the the same template for an entirely different movie is another. But as one YouTube viewer pointed out, “I’d try to say something smart but I’m sure these movies made money so the jokes on us.”

So it turns out Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the same movie! As the ScreenJunkies and cinefilojermain23 point out, rather than repeating the transformers template, Michael Bay just borrowed scenes from another one of his action films, The Island.

I just want to remind Greg that I pointed out the similarities between Friends With Benefits and No Strings Attached back in November…let’s give credit where credit is due.
