Your Next Big Band: Passion Pit

16 Feb

You haven’t heard of Passion Pit yet? Seriously – get with it. As you can tell from the picture, the group consists of five dudes: Michael Angelakos (lead vocals/keyboards), Ian Hultquist (keyboards/guitar), Ayad Al Adhamy (synth/samples), Jeff Apruzzese (bass/synth bass) and Nate Donmoyer (drums). Passion Pit formed in 2007, from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Originally is was a solo project by Angelakos while in school at Emerson, and his 4 tracks on their first EP (Chunks of Change), were written for his girlfriend at the time (for Valentine’s Day)! After some live shows, shuffling of band members, and signing a contract – Passion Pit was formed.  But where did they get the name Passion Pit you ask? Well according the most reliable source on the internet, Wikipedia:

The slang Passion Pit is derived from traditional Variety-speak used in the Hollywood industry publication. The trade used the slang to refer to drive-in theatres, because of their privacy and romantic allure for teenagers

Pretty cool. Passion Pit released that EP Chunks of Change in 2008 – and added two additional tracks, one of them which has gained national attention for being in the Palm Pixi commercial, this one:

More after the jump – including an mp3!

I could listen to that song on repeat. Pitchfork Media included the “Sleepyhead” music video, directed by The Wilderness, in its top 40 music videos of 2008 list.

The band’s first full-length studio album, Manners, was released on May 19, 2009 in the United States. Their first single from that album, “The Reeling” has also gained some attention. Needless to say, these catchy beats, high pitch singing, and growing media exposure are sure to lead to a promising career for Passion Pit.
