Suh For Heisman

8 Dec

Maybe you have been following college football this year, maybe you haven’t. Either way, you need to know about the defensive lineman for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Ndamukong Suh (pronounced En-dom-ah-ken Soo). He’s not the only one on the Huskers with a hard to pronounce name either! Suh is a top NFL prospect; a 6 ft 4, 305 pound DL stud.

It was just announced that Suh is now up for the Heisman, he would be the first outright defensive player to ever win it. Suh will join Colt McCoy (Texas, quarterback), Mark Ingram (Alabama, running back), Toby Gerhart (Stanford, running back) and Tim Tebow (Florida, quarterback) at the 75th Heisman Trophy awards announcement, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square. The event will be televised live from New York City at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN.

This year Suh has been tearing it up on defense, an unstoppable force part of the resurgent Black Shirts of the Cornhusker’s defense. He is sure to be drafted in the top three picks in this year’s NFL draft. ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Jr. has said today that Suh is “amoung the best of the past 32 years.” Just how dominant is he? Here are some stats for you.

In 2009 Suh has registered 82 tackles and 12 quarterback sacks and has 26 quarterback hurries, 22 tackles for loss, 10 pass breakups, three blocked kicks, and one interception, including 12 tackles (seven for losses, a school single-game record) and 4.5 sacks in a 13-12 loss to the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship game.

That is an amazing season. Those 4.5 sacks in the Texas game were dominant. His performance in the Big XII Championship game might have taken Texas QB Colt McCoy out of the Heisman running (in my opinion), who never looked comfortable, to see what I mean, watch this video highlight of Suh vs Texas. Suh sacked Texas quarterback Colt McCoy 4.5 times in the game. McCoy had never been sacked that many times by another team during his four-year career at Texas–let alone one player. Nebraska had nine sacks as a team.

He’s sucha beast, i can’t watch the vid right now but i’m pretty sure it contains him man handling mccoy and throwing him to the ground, shoving players effortlessly 5 yards on their butts. sadly he won’t win and ingram or gerhart will win. granted, ingram is really good too and carried his team all year.
