Modern Warp Fair: A Modern Warfare 2 Review

11 Nov

In 2003, a little known game called Call of Duty was releases upon the world and a massive online community was born. Although popular and successful, the Call of Duty franchise seemed overdone and trite since its setting was always World War II.

"I can only play this for so long!"

Fast forward four years later when Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare came out. Everyone was messing themselves over how refreshing it was to use the technologies and weapons of today’s military to embarrass other players into submission online. And because of this positive reaction towards the game, especially the online features, the once dwarfed multiplayer community, by the likes of the Halo franchise, was growing in popularity. Needless to say, when Modern Warfare 2 was announced, nerds and douchebags alike celebrated in unison and patiently waited for November 10, 2009.

He's walking on fire! That's how 'MERICA does it!

According to preliminary sales figures from Activision, Modern Warfare 2 has sold approximately 4.7 million units in both the United States and the UK in the first 24 hours of its release. I must admit, I was one of those guys that stood in front of a Best Buy at midnight waiting for my own copy. Nerd alert! But standing out there in a line of about 20 people made me realize something. We weren’t waiting there just to go and sit in front of the t.v. and play through the game. No – we were all there because we wanted to virtually embarrass fools online. But since this blog is just about reviews and not a “toot your own horn” post, I’ll just stick to reviewing the multiplayer feature and not my amazing gaming skills.

The people at Infinity Ward have stepped up their game, no pun intended, to increase the ridiculousness of its online capabilities. They’ve added new weapons, new perks, and new maps. But more importantly, they have implemented a new customizable killstreak feature which allows you to choose from a list of 25 ways to run your opponents’ online experience. One of these killstreaks is a tactical nuke. Yes, you heard me. A tactical. nuke. However epic ending a game with a nuke is, the most rewarding killstreak would have to be manning an AC130 or an attack chopper. It’s pure amazeballs. The new game types such as Capture the Flag, new to this franchise, and Moshpit, which just jumbles all of their multiplayer game types all into one convenient place, make your online gaming that much more diverse. But if you’re a loyal fanboy to the franchise, I’m assuming you’re already aware of all of these things. So when it comes down to it, Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer has a great balance of old and new. It’s familiar enough that you can hop on and play it without going through a “tutorial” but new enough to have you jizzing in your knickers because of the new things they have put into the game. It’s rating? On my scale of 5, it’s a 10. This game is a dime piece shawty.
